Job Title: Associate Scientist 2

Description:

The Associate Scientist 2 will be responsible for a wide range of tasks related to handling, processing, and analyzing samples containing biological threat agents. The individual must maintain a DHS Suitability security clearance and demonstrate proficiency in microbiological and molecular techniques, including real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Responsibilities:

The Associate Scientist 2 shall perform, at a minimum, the following tasks and responsibilities in accordance with standard operating procedures:

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a DHS Suitability security clearance

  • Handling, receipt, and processing of daily operational, Quality Assurance, verification and proficiency test samples potentially containing biological threat agents

  • Extended walking, lifting (50–60 lbs), and stair navigation may be required

  • Repetitive sample processing motions (e.g., pipetting, cutting, gripping) for 1–4 hours

  • Perform biological science work using microbiological and molecular techniques, including DNA extraction and real-time PCR as Associate Scientist 2

  • Work in varied laboratory settings (e.g., BSL-2, BSL-3) using BSCs and hoods

  • Wear full PPE, including respiratory and full-body protection, for up to 4 hours

  • Prepare reagents and samples

  • Follow Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) protocols

  • Decontaminate workspaces, cabinets, hoods, and equipment using bleach and alcohol

  • Maintain chain-of-custody (CoC)

  • Independently analyze results and perform data entry in digital systems

  • Perform routine equipment calibration, maintenance, and cleaning

  • Conduct QA/QC swabbing across multiple lab areas

  • Proper disposal and handling of biohazardous waste (up to 40 lbs)

  • Autoclave operation and multiple bag handling from BSL labs

  • Maintain and rotate inventory; lift and store items up to 70 lbs

  • Support logistics for DHS equipment inventory and documentation

  • Perform acceptance testing and QA of reagents according to SOPs and QAPP

  • Comply with Public Health Laboratory QA systems as Associate Scientist 2

  • Maintain documentation for training, SOP reviews, and competencies

  • Analyze external QA samples as per SOP and QA guidelines

  • Archive, store, and ship samples up to 40 lbs

  • Follow safety, regulatory, and information safeguarding guidelines

  • Prepare reports, answer technical questions, and provide recommendations

  • Evaluate products/processes and demonstrate testing competency

  • Work scheduled shifts including weekends, holidays, and rotating night shifts (e.g., 3:00–11:00 pm)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field
  • At least one year of laboratory bench experience
  • Experience with PCR and aseptic techniques as Associate Scientist 2
  • Desirable: Biological Safety Level (BSL)-3 experience

  • Availability required 24/7/365 in case of emergencies
