Job Description
Heluna Health is hiring a Microbiologist I to work within the Mycology Unit of the Mycobacterial, Mycotic & Parasitic Diseases Section at the Microbial Diseases Laboratory. The role involves performing molecular and culture-based testing on patient specimens to detect, identify, and characterize Candida auris as part of the Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network (ARLN). This position also supports infection control, data reporting to the CDC, whole genome sequencing, and assay development.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and log specimens in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Perform detection, culture, identification, and characterization of fungal pathogens using molecular and conventional techniques.
- Prepare test reports and communicate findings with internal and external partners.
- Follow quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Maintain culture collections, laboratory supplies, and accurate records.
- Prepare and test media and reagents.
- Assist in validating new laboratory methods.
- Participate in scientific meetings and seminars.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, microbiology, medical microbiology, or molecular biology.
- Experience in microbial pathogen work, preferably in clinical or public health labs.
- Knowledge of sterile techniques and molecular/culture methods.
- Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, email).
- Public Health Microbiologist Certificate (or eligibility, with certification required within 6 months).
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
