Job Description
The Senior Associate Scientist, Viral Vaccines, will play a central role in Pfizer’s vaccine operations. This position involves generating viruses such as HPIV, HCMV, influenza viruses, and SARS-CoV-2 under BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions. The scientist will support mammalian cell culture, virus characterization, assay development, and the distribution of viral reagents across research teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain mammalian cell cultures and optimize virus propagation to produce high-titer stocks for vaccine research.
- Perform virus titrations (TCID50, plaque assay, FFA) and characterize viral samples.
- Manage reagent inventories, coordinate virus production and distribution to meet research deadlines.
- Write, review, and update standard operating procedures, test methods, and technical reports.
- Collaborate with early bioprocess, preclinical, and clinical development teams.
- Support assay development and high-throughput testing for clinical and non-clinical programs.
- Present progress and results to colleagues and management.
Qualifications
Must-Have:
- BS in Life Sciences (Biology, Virology, Microbiology, Immunology) with 3+ years of lab experience OR MS with 1+ year.
- Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques.
- Proficiency in DNA/RNA extraction and qPCR.
- Experience working in BSL-2 labs; ability to work independently and in teams.
- Strong communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
Preffered
- Background in virology with experience in influenza, SARS-CoV-2, HPIV, and HCMV.
- BSL-3 experience.
- Familiarity with LIMS, GraphPad Prism, PyMOL, UCSF Chimera, or related software.
- Experience with immunoassays (neutralization, FFA) and instruments such as QuantStudio and CTL ImmunoSpot.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual base salary: $66,500 – $110,900
- Eligible for Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan (7.5% bonus target)
