About the Job
The Scientist I, Assay Development supports the late-stage development and optimization of next generation sequencing (NGS)-based assays in Foundation Medicineโs clinical laboratories. Leveraging a strong working knowledge of molecular biology, this role collaborates cross-functionally with scientists and stakeholders to advance high-throughput automation and next-generation sequencing workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently execute complex molecular biology techniques, including NGS workflows.
- Collaborate with molecular biologists, computational scientists, and regulatory scientists to develop clinical oncology NGS diagnostic assays.
- Design and conduct feasibility, development, and validation studies.
- Draft and maintain standard operating protocols (SOPs).
- Operate complex automation and laboratory equipment.
- Analyze and interpret data to identify optimization opportunities.
- Maintain accurate experimental records and reports within the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Prepare technical presentations and reports for internal review.
- Train and mentor research assistants and associates in assay development best practices.
- Perform other assigned duties as needed.
Qualifications for Scientist Jobs
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelorโs Degree in Molecular Biology or a related Life Science field with 6+ years of experience, OR
- Masterโs Degree with 2+ years of experience, OR
- PhD with relevant laboratory training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree (Masterโs or PhD) in Molecular Biology or related Life Science field.
- Experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA-seq, NGS library preparation, and target enrichment.
- Proven experience developing and implementing high-complexity clinical assays.
- Knowledge of regulated environments such as FDA QSR, CLIA, ISO, and CAP standards.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and data-driven approach to assay optimization.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Understanding of HIPAA compliance and patient data privacy.

Expected Salary Range:
$104,000 โ $120,000 per year (based on experience, education, and market conditions).
