Job Summary
The Biochemist II independently performs laboratory functions related to tissue culture production, including hybridoma roller bottle culture, ascites production, insect cell shaker culture, recombinant protein expression, antibody purification, and in-process assays. The role requires strong sterile technique, attention to detail, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to complete assignments on time with high quality. Some weekend, holiday, or on-call work may be required.
Biochemist Job Responsibilities
Primary Duties & Roles
- Perform hybridoma roller bottle culture under aseptic conditions.
- Conduct recombinant protein, insect cell shaker, and ascites production.
- Execute purification protocols:
- Affinity chromatography
- Ion exchange chromatography
- Size exclusion chromatography
- Operate and maintain purification systems such as AKTA Pure.
- Prepare buffers, media, and chemical solutions according to SOPs.
- Analyze purified proteins using:
- SDS-PAGE
- LAL
- Sterility testing
- Maintain accurate electronic lab notebook records.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project timelines.
- Present findings in team meetings and contribute to technical reports.
- Ensure compliance with GMP standards, safety protocols, and company policies.
- Create quality notifications and initiate Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) in SAP.
- Support workplace safety and participate in Environmental Health & Safety programs.
- Address and resolve hazards or safety incidents promptly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Required for Biochemist Jobs
- Required: BA/BS in Life Sciences, or related field
- Preferred:
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in hybridoma cell culture production
- Experience in monoclonal antibody or recombinant protein purification
Knowledge & Skills
- Experience with automated systems; AKTA systems preferred
- Proficient decision-making, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Proficient understanding of quality systems
- Basic Microsoft Office skills
- Basic knowledge of ISO 13485 and ISO 9001
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift ~20 lbs
- May require climbing a 2-step ladder
Work Environment
- Manufacturing floor environment, including low-light areas
- Controlled Non-Classified Cleanrooms
- Expected on-site presence at least 4 days per week (BD onsite collaboration policy)
