Position Focus

This role is primarily focused on microbiology testing, including:

  • Coliform and Enterococcus testing
  • Air spore testing
  • Heterotrophic plate counts
  • Assistance with additional water quality testing as needed

Microbiology Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Water Quality Specialist II is responsible for physical, microbiological, and chemical water quality testing, as well as data analysis and interpretation for Monterey Bay Aquarium seawater systems, auxiliary water systems, and research projects. The role collaborates with internal departments to troubleshoot water quality issues, develop new system parameters, implement laboratory quality control programs, train staff and volunteers, and support research initiatives.

Core Activities

  • Analyze and interpret quality control results and experimental data
  • Troubleshoot testing errors and quality control issues
  • Design new testing methods, research proposals, and protocols
  • Conduct laboratory and tank-side water analyses, including:
    • Physical chemistry parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen)
    • Nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate)
    • Techniques: IDEXX Quanti-Trays, Tecta, HPCs, spectrophotometry, titration, HPLC, ICP-OES, handheld meters
  • Prepare reagents, standard curves, and QC standards
  • Recommend corrective actions for lab and water system issues
  • Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment and auxiliary water systems
  • Train staff and volunteers in lab procedures and safety

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 2 years post-degree laboratory experience in analytical water chemistry
  • Advanced understanding of seawater microbiology, chemistry, nutrients, pH, alkalinity, and nitrogen cycle
  • Strong lab skills (pipettes, instrumentation, glassware)
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory and chemical safety
  • Experience training staff and volunteers
  • Data analysis and experimental design experience
  • Experience in aquarium water quality labs preferred
  • Technical experience with:
    • UV spectrophotometry
    • High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
    • Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
    • Flow cytometry (familiarity preferred)
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Valid California driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 3 months)

Physical Requirements For a Microbiology Job
