The Scientist Job Role
We are seeking a passionate Automation Scientist to join our Sequencing Development and Automation team. This role focuses on developing, optimizing, and validating automated laboratory workflows that support population genomics initiatives and large-scale sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology.
You will work across laboratory and automation environments to ensure workflows are robust, scalable, and ready for high-throughput applications.
Key Responsibilities
Automation & Workflow Development
- Design, plan, and deliver end-to-end automated workflows using liquid handling systems
- Operate across multiple automation and sequencing platforms to support internal and external projects
- Optimize workflows for scalability, reproducibility, and throughput
Laboratory & Data Analysis
- Perform and support NGS sample preparation and sequencing workflows
- Analyze experimental data and clearly report results to inform project decisions
- Maintain high standards of experimental accuracy and documentation
Collaboration & Technical Leadership
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact products
- Act as a technical expert in laboratory automation, providing troubleshooting, guidance, and training
- Establish, review, and improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Continuous Improvement
- Ensure best practices in laboratory operations, health & safety, and risk assessments
- Stay up to date with scientific, technological, and automation advancements to enhance platform capability and efficiency
Required Qualifications & Experience For Scientist Jobs
PhD or BSc/MSc with equivalent experience in:
- Molecular Biology
- Genomics
- Biotechnology
- Related life sciences discipline
Strong hands-on experience with:
- NGS sample preparation
- DNA/RNA extraction
- Core lab techniques (pipetting, normalization, thermocycling)
Experience operating and coding automated liquid handling systems, such as:
- Hamilton STAR
- Tecan DreamPrep
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
- High attention to detail and strong experimental rigor
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
