Microbiologist Job Summary
Under the direction of Laboratory Supervisors, the Microbiologist is responsible for conducting microbiological testing on finished products (commercial, R&D, and stability), raw materials, and water samples. Additional responsibilities include antimicrobial effectiveness testing, bacterial isolate identification, and media growth promotion.
The role requires accurate result generation while complying with GMP requirements, using established compendial and in-house methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform microbiological testing of non-sterile pharmaceutical products and related lab activities
- Understand and apply compendial requirements for microbiological testing
- Collaborate with microbiologists and supervisors in troubleshooting and problem-solving
- Utilize LIMS, SAP, and Microapps for laboratory transactions
- Assist senior microbiologists in executing protocols and ensuring timely testing to meet turnaround times
- Verify microbial test results and calculations for accuracy
- Communicate out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT) results to supervisors promptly
- Report issues regarding methodology or instrumentation to leadership
- Monitor and coordinate the availability of laboratory supplies and equipment
- Promote a positive and collaborative work environment
- Ensure compliance with GMP, GLP, SOPs, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of corporate values
Microbiologist Job Requirements
Education & Experience
- B.Sc. in Microbiology or a closely related field
- 1+ year of microbiology laboratory experience preferred; pharmaceutical industry experience is an advantage
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of microbiological techniques, including aseptic technique
- Experience with automated laboratory instrumentation preferred (e.g., MALDI-TOF, autoclave, sterility test isolator, bacterial endotoxin test units)
- Familiarity with LIMS and basic computer skills
- Ability to interpret results and perform work with minimal supervision
Additional Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving and organizational skills
- Understanding and application of GMP and GLP principles
- Ability to perform repetitive bench work, including pipetting, serial dilutions, and sub-culturing
- Ability to work in manufacturing areas or mechanical rooms for sample collection
- May involve shift rotations including evenings or weekends
Compensation For Microbiologist Role
- Hiring Range: $48,367.89 – $59,395.52 CAD/year
- Final salary may vary based on experience, knowledge, and skills
