Project Background

Synapses are specialized cellular structures essential for neuronal communication and plasticity. Local protein synthesis, turnover, and the precise spatial and temporal regulation of mRNAs and RNA-binding proteins are crucial for maintaining synaptic vesicle cluster stability and neuronal function. Despite major advances in synapse biology, the molecular mechanisms controlling synaptic protein turnover and RNA localization during neuronal activity remain poorly understood.

This PhD project aims to elucidate how mRNA-binding proteins regulate synaptic protein turnover, RNA localization, and synaptic vesicle cluster stability at the molecular and cellular level.

Research Focus & Tasks

  • Apply advanced molecular neuroscience techniques, including spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and advanced imaging of synaptic compartments
  • Generate comprehensive datasets describing synaptic composition and dynamics
  • Develop and apply quantitative computational models and network analyses
  • Integrate molecular and computational data to identify regulatory pathways
  • Design and perform targeted functional experiments guided by computational predictions

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Life Sciences with a strong academic record
  • Strong interest in cellular and molecular neuroscience
  • Data analysis and programming skills (required and further developed during the project)
  • Basic wet lab experience
  • High motivation, initiative, and strong research orientation
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
