About the Patent Analyst Role
Clarivate is seeking a Patent Analyst with expertise in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biotechnology to support its long-standing contract with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). This is a remote, flexible 1099 independent contractor role focused on PCT Chapter I Search and Examination services.
As a Patent Analyst, you will apply your technical background to research and analyze cutting-edge technologies by conducting comprehensive prior-art searches and preparing written opinions on patentability. Clarivate has supported the USPTO in this capacity since 2005.
Key Responsibilities
- Accept projects weekly based on availability and Clarivate’s needs, each with a defined due date
- Quickly read and understand patent disclosures, including key technical nuances
- Perform comprehensive prior-art searches and document a complete, logical search history
- Prepare written opinions applying relevant prior art to the disclosure
- Maintain proficiency with commercial patent searching databases and proprietary technical databases
- Stay current with best practices and updates to search procedures through self-directed review
- Deliver high-quality work consistently and on time
- Ensure compliance with Clarivate’s Code of Business Ethics and Corporate Conduct
Required Qualifications For Patent Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience working with patents or in the intellectual property field
- At least 1 year of industry experience or advanced research in a related technical field
- Ability to pass a USPTO background check
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance
- U.S. citizen or work-eligible legal resident who has resided in the U.S. for the past two years
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior patent examining or patent searching experience
- Strong skills in developing search strategies and conducting complex searches
- Excellent time management and deadline-driven work habits
- Experience using Orbit, PatBase, Google Scholar, or PatSeer
- Master’s degree or PhD
Required Equipment
- Reliable high-speed internet connection (minimum 10 Mbps download / 1 Mbps upload)
- Secure, private work location (public areas are not permitted)
- Phone and voicemail service for business communication

Compensation
- $475 per patent case completed, based on productivity
- Individual pay may vary depending on experience, education, skills, and expertise
