Microbiology Job Overview

SGS is seeking a Laboratory Technician I, Microbiology to support microbiological testing activities at its Fairfield, NJ location. The technician will perform standardized testing procedures, maintain laboratory operations, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct microbiological testing following established methods such as ASTM, BAM, PCPC, USP, and EPA; testing may involve direct interaction with test subjects
  • Apply core microbial testing techniques, including aseptic technique, serial dilutions, plating, environmental monitoring, and colony counting according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions
  • Accurately and consistently record laboratory data
  • Perform laboratory maintenance activities including stocking consumables, media preparation, quality control procedures, storage of research materials and microorganisms, cleaning glassware, and general housekeeping
  • Wear and properly maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection, gloves, and lab coats
  • Calibrate and verify laboratory instrumentation as required, ensuring proper documentation
  • Maintain appropriate labeling, handling, storage, use, and disposal of solutions, biohazardous materials, hazardous waste, and microbiological cultures
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as balances, autoclaves, pH meters, pipettes, biosafety cabinets, and centrifuges
  • Collaborate effectively with SGS colleagues and study sponsors as part of a team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or equivalent industrial laboratory experience
  • 0–2 years of laboratory experience
