Bioinformatics Internship Overview
Boehringer Ingelheim offers an internship opportunity within the Bioprocess & Analytical Development / Modelling and Data Analysis Division. The intern will support digital bioprocess development initiatives, particularly in the creation of Digital Twins for large-scale mammalian cell culture manufacturing.
The role involves working with time-course data from online sensors and offline metabolite measurements to model and predict process dynamics. The intern will contribute to data preprocessing and take responsibility for implementing machine learning methods.
Depending on project alignment and internal opportunities, there may be potential to transition into a Master’s thesis project.
Key Responsibilities
- Hybrid Modeling: Integrating mechanistic models (e.g., mass balances) with machine learning approaches to develop informed process models
- Advanced Machine Learning Architectures: Testing and implementing new mathematical formulations for time-series forecasting, such as Neural ODEs or deep learning approaches
- Causal AI: Developing algorithms to distinguish correlation from causation in bioreactor data to support root cause analysis of batch deviations
- Process Optimization: Conducting sensitivity analyses and in-silico optimizations to identify optimal “Golden Batch” process conditions
Applicants are requested to indicate their preferred topic area in the cover letter.
Candidate Profile
- Master’s student in Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related discipline
- Strong programming skills in Python, particularly Pandas, Scikit-Learn, and PyTorch
- Knowledge of cell metabolism or chemical engineering principles is advantageous
- Strong analytical mindset and ability to work with complex, high-dimensional datasets
