Protein Modifications Intern Role Overview

The intern will focus on improving laboratory operations while gaining hands-on exposure to analytical techniques in a biotech environment. The role is suited for individuals interested in creating structure, optimizing processes, and enhancing system efficiency.

The position is within the Protein & Cell Supply (PCS) department in Utrecht. The intern will work on improving the organization, management, and accessibility of centrally stored materials such as proteins across the organization.

This internship emphasizes operational excellence rather than scientific research. The intern will optimize shared lab storage systems (including cold rooms and freezers) to ensure materials are stored in a structured, efficient, and compliant manner.

Using a Lean Six Sigma mindset, the intern will identify inefficiencies, reduce waste (e.g., search time and manual checks), and design a future-proof system that enhances usability, traceability, and operational effectiveness.

Additionally, the intern will gain exposure to analytical techniques used to assess the quality of stored materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a structured layout for centrally stored materials in cold storage environments.
  • Develop systems to improve usability, traceability, and efficiency for shared lab storage users.
  • Analyze workflows to identify opportunities for reducing manual work, errors, and search time.
  • Support verification of material data (e.g., concentration and volume) for selected samples.
  • Gain hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as A280 measurements, mass spectrometry, HPSEC, and CE-SDS.
  • Learn lab automation workflows, including systems like Tecan Fluent and Excel-based tools.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, compliant, and scalable storage environment aligned with laboratory standards.

Requirements for Protein Modifications Intern Role

  • Currently enrolled in an MLO or HLO Bachelor’s program at a University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands (e.g., Biology, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Research, or related fields).
  • The internship must be a mandatory component of the degree program, supported by a formal agreement between Genmab, the candidate, and the educational institution.
  • Strong interest in operational excellence, process improvement, or lab organization (no prior Lean Six Sigma experience required).
  • Organized, structured, and detail-oriented working style.
  • Strong English communication skills, as it is the company’s primary working language.

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit a complete application, including a CV and motivation letter. These documents should provide sufficient detail to help the company understand the candidate’s background and suitability for the role.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate:

  • Is genuinely passionate about the company’s purpose
  • Demonstrates precision and excellence in their work
  • Values a science-based approach to problem-solving
  • Collaborates effectively with diverse teams
  • Supports and enables team success
  • Is comfortable navigating uncertainty and innovating
  • Has experience in or interest in a dynamic, fast-growing environment
  • Is hardworking while maintaining a positive and enjoyable work approach

Work Environment

Genmab promotes an agile working environment to support work-life balance. Its offices are designed as open, collaborative spaces that connect employees while integrating laboratory work. The organization values both in-office and remote collaboration to foster innovation.
