Job Description:
Provide scientific and technical support to the Microbiology department by assisting the Medical Scientist in charge, performing and troubleshooting diagnostic procedures, and working collaboratively with clinical and laboratory teams while maintaining confidentiality.
The Team:
Northern Tasmanian Pathology Service (NTPS) provides Pathology services to Launceston General Hospital and the Northern regions of Tasmania. We are the only public pathology service operating in North Tasmania. NTPS aims to deliver a high-quality service to general practitioners, medical specialists, and private hospitals, providing patients with no out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare-eligible tests. The team at NTPS comprises a large group of multidisciplinary scientists, technicians, non-technical staff, and Pathologists.
The Medical Scientist Job Role:
- Assist the Medical Scientist in charge with the day-to-day tasks of the Microbiology department, as assigned.
- Apply professional judgement and scientific specialist knowledge towards performance, analysis, and troubleshooting of standard diagnostic procedures, whilst displaying a high level of scientific skills.
- Forge a close professional relationship with interdepartmental teams and be able to communicate information confidentially with requestors and clinical personnel seeking information on samples, results, or test-related information in this Medical Scientist Job.
- Ability to work in a team.

Details of Appointment:
- Fixed-term, part-time, shift worker position, working 68 hours per fortnight, commencing from a mutually agreed-upon date until 21 January 2027.
- Salary: $73,834 to $111,364 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is in addition to this amount.
- Allowances: Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria for the Medical Scientist Job:
- Successful applicants must meet the essential criteria for this Job.
- Tertiary qualification/program of study in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or Science or Applied Science, or equivalent, suitable to the position from a recognised institution.
- Eligible for membership with a relevant professional body such as the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, the Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, the Australian Society for Microbiology, the Human Genetics Society of Australasia, or the Australian Society of Cytology.
- Where there is no relevant professional body, the essential qualification must be met.
