MSc Internship Description
MSc internship candidates joining the System Development team at QIAGEN Manchester will contribute to the development of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products used in clinical laboratories around the world. The team focuses on nucleic acid extraction and analysis technologies, including qPCR, dPCR, and NGS platforms. The role involves supporting the development of new systems and assisting with existing technologies through lifecycle management processes.
Due to ongoing IVD system development efforts, QIAGEN is seeking a student intern to work alongside experienced scientists. The position is primarily laboratory-based and involves performing functional testing of instrumentation, plastics, software, and chemistry components. The successful candidate will gain exposure to ISO 13485-compliant development processes and develop practical knowledge of IVD system development and troubleshooting. This life sciences internship is intended for current MSc students starting their course in Autumn 2026 and offers part-time work alongside academic studies.
Qualifications
Life sciences internship applicants should possess the following qualifications:
Essential
- BSc degree-level qualification in a Life Science subject.
- Enrolled on an MSc course with availability to work at least 15 hours per week.
- Hands-on experience with basic laboratory techniques.
- Experience with dilutions, DNA/RNA quantification, and pipette usage.
- Strong willingness to learn new skills and technologies.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to changing project priorities.
- Short cover letter (maximum one page) outlining relevant experience and expectations of the opportunity.
Desirable
- Comfortable analyzing output files and log files.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory devices, instrumentation, and/or automation.
MSc Internship – Key Responsibilities
- Conducting laboratory studies in accordance with QIAGEN guidelines and processes.
- Working with members of the System Development team to draft and review study worksheets and protocols.
- Performing functional testing of instrumentation, plastics, software, and chemistry components.
- Supporting compliance-related activities and laboratory housekeeping tasks.
- Assisting with worksheet reviews and documentation management.
- Supporting laboratory cleaning and maintenance activities.
- Collaborating with scientists on ongoing IVD system development projects.
- Contributing to troubleshooting and development activities within the System Development team.
