About the University

Research associate role opportunities at the University of Cambridge offer researchers the chance to contribute to scientific discoveries. The Department of Veterinary Medicine conducts internationally recognized research in infectious diseases, immunology, animal health, and translational biomedical sciences while fostering an inclusive and collaborative research environment.

Research Associate Job Description

Research associate role applications are invited for a fixed-term postdoctoral position funded by the BBSRC for 18 months, starting from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project aims to elucidate mechanisms of antiviral immunity and control in bats. The main focus of the research will be to characterise variants of NLRP3, MyD88, and STING found in specific bat lineages. Collaborating groups have reconstructed ancestral versions of these genes and identified lineage-specific residue substitutions of interest. Gene variants will be introduced using plasmid transfection, lentiviral transduction, or CRISPR-mediated genome modification in human or bat cells.

Qualifications

Research Associate Job qualifications include:

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Evolutionary Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with cell culture.
  • Experience in cloning.
  • Understanding of innate immunity (preferred).
  • Knowledge of evolutionary bioinformatics (advantageous).

Research Associate Job – Key Responsibilities

  • Characterise NLRP3, MyD88, and STING variants.
  • Perform cell culture and cloning.
  • Conduct plasmid transfection and lentiviral transduction.
  • Carry out CRISPR genome modification.
  • Work with human and bat cell models.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Present research findings and support administration.
  • Promote teamwork and inclusive research practices.

If you’re looking for a research associate job in the UK, this opportunity at the University of Cambridge offers an excellent platform to advance your career in antiviral immunity, CRISPR, and cell biology research.
