Research Assistant Jobs: Job Description
This research assistant job primarily involves conducting vaccine development studies for Plasmodium falciparum. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will assist with maintaining malaria parasites and bacterial cultures, limited pilot scale protein production, protein purification with fast performance liquid chromatography, western blots, and other basic microbiology benchtop techniques. The Research Assistant will assist with performing animal immunizations and collection of vaccine anti-sera. The Research Assistant will be responsible for keeping supplies in stock and will provide technical support for the research project.
The Kurtis lab’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms that cause tropical diseases such as Malaria. Experiments performed include western blot, PCR assays, parasite assays, and ELISA based assays.
This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of 30 September 2027, which may be extended based upon available funding.
Research Assistant Jobs: Eligibility Criteria
- Required: B.S. or B.A. in a Biology-related field.
- Required: Prior related research experience or extensive coursework in molecular biology, parasitology, and immunology.
- And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General background knowledge of malaria parasite biology is a plus.

- Ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (such as MS Office).
- Willingness and ability to occasionally work evenings and/or weekends for parasite culture maintenance.
- The person in this position frequently communicates with faculty and staff who inquire about their research. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
