NUH Life Sciences Internship: Job Description
This NUH Life Sciences Internship will support the Brain Cancer Programme’s brain tumour database, focusing primarily on clinical data collection and accurate database entry to strengthen research and programme development. Working closely with the Programme Chairperson and Case Manager, the intern will help ensure dataset completeness and quality while gaining exposure to oncology care pathways and patient navigation.
Key Responsibilities
- Brain Tumour Database Collection & Entry – Primary scope focused on accurate clinical data collection, registry entry and data quality assurance.
- Data Extraction & Collection:
- Retrieve relevant clinical data from electronic medical records, such as EPIC.
- Collect data on patient demographics, tumour characteristics, clinical presentation, imaging, treatment details and follow-up outcomes.
- Liaise with clinicians or programme coordinators to clarify missing or ambiguous information.
- Data Entry & Quality Assurance:
- Enter data accurately into the Brain Tumour Registry.
- Perform routine data audits and validation, including duplicate checks, completeness checks and logical accuracy reviews.
- Flag inconsistencies or data quality issues to the programme team.
- Maintain data dictionaries, variable definitions and version history.
- Documentation Support – Secondary scope supporting consistent and sustainable data management processes:
- During the NUH Life Sciences Internship, support the development of programme standard operating procedures related to data-entry workflows.
- Maintain process documentation to promote consistency and service continuity.
- Multidisciplinary Meeting Shadowing – Observe how multidisciplinary inputs inform brain tumour care decisions:
- Attend Neuro-Oncology Tumour Board sessions as an observer.
- Observe presentations by neurosurgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists.
- Understand how multidisciplinary inputs shape treatment recommendations, including surgery, radiotherapy and systemic therapy.
- Learn how decisions are informed by imaging, pathology findings, clinical presentation and tumour type.
Eligibility Criteria
- Currently pursuing a degree or diploma in Life Sciences or a related field.
- Strong analytical and organisational skills.
- Meticulous and accurate in clinical data extraction and entry.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
- Good verbal communication and documentation-writing skills.
- Professional and able to maintain confidentiality when handling clinical information.
- Interest in healthcare service improvement and patient engagement.
- Able to work collaboratively with clinical and administrative stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with electronic medical records, databases and Microsoft Office applications.
