This MSc PhD in Cardiovascular Science opportunity offers a rare chance for aspiring graduate students to engage in groundbreaking research in cardiac arrhythmias and translational cardiovascular medicine at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute under the supervision of Dr. Darryl Davis. Applications are open now!

About the University

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is a leading research and treatment center specializing in cardiovascular diseases. Located in Ottawa, Canada, it focuses on advancing knowledge in heart health and developing innovative therapies to improve patient outcomes. The institute is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

MSc PhD in Cardiovascular Science: Training Philosophy

Students are encouraged to ask important questions regarding cardiovascular disease, understanding the biological mechanisms that lead to clinically significant phenotypes, and how these discoveries can translate into better therapies. Projects are designed around scientific inquiries rather than isolated techniques, fostering critical interpretation of results and active participation in the intellectual life of the lab.

Graduate Projects

Graduate projects encompass molecular and cellular studies, human cardiac cell systems, and preclinical models, emphasizing the translation of experimental findings into clinical applications.

  • 01 Atrial biology: Inflammation, inflammasome signaling, fibroblast biology, fibrosis, and arrhythmogenic remodeling.
  • 02 Extracellular vesicles: EV biology, therapeutic mechanisms, cellular responses, and biological activity.
  • 03 Human systems: Primary cardiac cells and patient-specific experimental systems for mechanistic studies.
  • 04 Disease models: Preclinical cardiovascular models used to test mechanism and therapeutic efficacy.

Cardiovascular Science Graduate Applicants

Strong candidates combine academic performance with curiosity, analytical thinking, clear communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

MSc Applicants

  • BSc or equivalent in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, biology, or a related discipline.
  • Strong academic performance.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PhD Applicants

  • MSc or equivalent in a relevant biomedical or life-science discipline.
  • Strong academic and research performance.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Previous experience in experimental biomedical research is strongly valued.
  • Previous experience with cell culture, molecular biology, cardiovascular research, extracellular vesicles, or related experimental techniques is considered an asset.

Application Process
