Jain Lab Postdoc 2026 Job Description

The Jain Lab studies how organisms interact with their environments — how what we breathe and what we eat affects metabolism and disease progression — with a focus on oxygen and vitamin/cofactor metabolism.

The lab notes prior work showing that chronic hypoxia (equivalent to living at high altitude in regions such as Peru or Nepal) can serve as a therapy for mitochondrial disease and is currently in clinical trials, inspiring a broader set of research directions ranging from fundamental biochemistry to animal physiology.

Research questions on the posting include:

  • How cells and organisms sense oxygen or vitamin levels;
  • Whether novel oxygen and vitamin sensors exist;
  • How the body adapts to variations in oxygen or vitamin levels;
  • How supply–demand mismatches of oxygen or vitamins contribute to disease;
  • How to “turn the oxygen and vitamin dials” as creative new therapies;
  • What the most practical form of turning these concepts into translatable therapies would be.
