Cell Biology Postdoc Job at Babraham, UK | Research Scientist | Earn Up to £45,729

How do cells stop proteins from clumping together as we age? This Cell Biology Postdoc Job at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, United Kingdom, offers a chance to study extracellular proteostasis in healthy ageing and host defence using C. elegans. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Signalling) role in the David group welcomes candidates with a PhD in cell or molecular biology, genetics or a related field.

  • Position: Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Signalling)
  • Location: Babraham, Cambridge, United Kingdom
  • Research Area: Extracellular Proteostasis, Healthy Ageing and Host Defence

About The Institute

The Babraham Institute is a life-science research charity known for fundamental discovery science that supports lifelong health. Its research is organised into Epigenetics, Signalling and Immunology programmes, backed by dedicated scientific core facilities.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist Job Description

The David group in the Signalling Programme aims to discover mechanisms that promote healthy ageing and ease age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. The group’s recent work has uncovered mechanisms that prevent protein aggregation outside cells in C. elegans.

The postdoctoral scientist will investigate how extracellular proteostasis contributes to healthy ageing and to host defence against pathogens. The position is initially funded for three years.

Cell Biology Postdoc Job – Key Responsibilities

  • Use genetics, microscopy, proteomics and functional assays in C. elegans to study extracellular proteostasis.
  • Assess the impact of extracellular proteostasis on health at tissue and whole-organism levels.
  • Investigate links between proteostasis, healthy ageing and defence against pathogens.
  • Develop an independent, curiosity-driven research project within the group.
  • Solve challenging scientific questions and contribute to the group’s research goals.

Educational Requirements and Eligibility For Cell Biology Postdoc Job

  • Qualification: PhD in cell or molecular biology, genetics or a related field. Applicants must hold the PhD or have submitted their thesis before starting.
  • Experience: A demonstrable academic research track record and prior research experience with C. elegans (required).
  • Funding: Initially available for three years.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience with microscopy (desirable).
  • Molecular cloning skills (desirable).
  • Experience with proteomics (desirable).
  • Experience generating transgenic C. elegans (desirable).
  • Curiosity-driven approach and ability to develop an independent research project.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is £38,298 to £45,729 per annum, depending on years of post-PhD experience. The starting salary is £35,363 per annum if the PhD has not yet been awarded. Postdocs can access career-development courses through the University of Cambridge Postdoc Academy and scientific training through Institute facilities.
