A summer internship at MIT Lincoln Laboratory will show you how professional research and critical thinking are done in real time, in real life.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s fundamental mission is to apply science and advanced technology to solving challenging problems of U.S. national security in areas such as cyber security; tactical air and counterterrorist systems; advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems; and more. Not only will your internship experience enhance your understanding of your field of study; you will contribute meaningful research results.

*Students have opportunities to:

  • Interface with national experts in numerous fields of research
  • Work with state-of-the-art equipment on real-world technical applications
  • Participate in a Laboratory-wide technical challenge
  • Opportunities to attend technical seminars and demonstrations
  • Present the results of their research conclusions at the end of the summer

*The program runs from late-May to early-August and provides the following:

  • Competitive hourly pay rate
  • Round-trip travel expense assistance for students relocating from 50 miles outside the Boston area
  • Subsidized housing up to 10 weeks for students whose permanent address is greater than 50 miles outside the Boston area
  • Daily free shuttle service from housing and MIT campus to Lincoln Laboratory (Monday through Friday only)

Eligibility Requirements:

Students must have at least completed their sophomore year of college or be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in one of these majors or a comparable technical field:

  • -Electrical Engineering
  • -Physics
  • -Computer Science
  • -Mathematics
  • -Mechanical Engineering
  • -Aerospace Engineering
  • -Molecular Biology/Biochemistry
  • -Materials Science
  • -Other Related Fields

Beyond that, we require:

  • An excellent academic record (3.50 or above)
  • Demonstrated academic achievements and campus involvement that have prepared you to interact with other top performing scholastic achievers and experienced staff in teams and across project areas
  • U.S. Citizenship (a requirement due to the unique work we perform)

*MIT Lincoln Laboratory plans to host an on-site 2022 Summer Research Program.  Depending on the status of the pandemic, the program may need to be moved to a virtual-only program to ensure the health and safety of the interns and all Laboratory employees.
