Discovery Chemistry and Process Chemistry (Boston, MA; Kenilworth, NJ; Rahway, NJ: West Point, PA; South San Francisco, CA)

The candidates will work alongside the scientists in an organic synthesis laboratory to invent novel chemical reactions relevant to the synthesis of drug-like molecules. Day-to-day research for the intern will focus on solving key challenges in reaction design utilizing the latest advances in organic synthesis. In addition to the discovery and development of synthetic routes to potential drug candidates, the Process Research department is engaged in bio- and chemocatalysis screening and development, laboratory automation, preparative-scale chromatography, and analytical research. Day-to-day research will focus on using techniques in organic chemistry to understand and solve key synthetic challenges of interest to the synthetic community.

Chemical Biology (Kenilworth, NJ; Cambridge, MA)

Chemical Biology Department (comprising of chemistry, proteomics, and cell pharmacology) focuses on delivering novel mechanisms into our pipeline, expanding druggable space, and the pursuit of detailed knowledge of the mechanism of action for our key pipeline assets. Candidates will leverage their chemical and biological expertise to solve complex biological problems working in both chemistry and biology laboratory spaces. The internship will provide an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge on how our company uses key technologies to create a synergistic toolbox for early discovery and beyond.

Chemical Engineering Research and Development (Rahway, NJ)

The CERD department develops the processing knowledge necessary to successfully scale-up and efficiently produce drugs at a commercial scale. Development efforts focus on ensuring robust, cost-effective, safe, environmentally benign chemical processes and advancing technologies for the laboratories, pilot plants, and manufacturing facilities to secure a competitive advantage for the company. Day-to-day research for the intern will focus on process and technology development, bulk drug supply, and/or commercial product launch. This internship will provide insight into our department and company culture, teach you the fundamentals of the pharmaceutical industry, and expose you to opportunities throughout our Research & Development Division and our Manufacturing Division.

The interns in will also participate in departmental and project team meetings to provide a broad perspective on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry. They will be responsible for accurate electronic notebook recording and safe lab practices. Interns will have the opportunity to gain further knowledge and skillsets via exposure to problems in process and discovery research, and perspective on the practical aspects of drug development. In addition, the intern student will have an opportunity to present their research results in both oral and written formats.

Required Education & Experience

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemical or Biochemical Engineering; OR a currently enrolled graduate student pursuing a Master’s or PhD. in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemical or Biochemical Engineering:
  • Candidates must have completed at least two years of studies toward a bachelor’s degree by June 2023.
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for 12 weeks beginning on 5JUN23 through 25AUG23

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Candidates should have a significant interest in organic chemistry, chemical biology or chemical engineering
  • Candidates should have basic laboratory skills and preferably previous research experience that includes use of various experimental techniques, electronic notebook recording, and safe lab practices.
  • Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
