The Molecular Biology Department emphasizes technological innovation for developing and applying novel molecular genetic approaches to model human disease and deliver therapeutic interventions. In turn, the Department functions as an incubator for new technologies that help to uncover unique biological insight, accelerate drug target discovery, and establish a foundation for cell-, gene- and nucleic acid-based therapeutic programs.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA (On site).

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic intern to join the Molecular Genetics Technology Development group to work on the optimization of genome engineering technology in therapeutically relevant cellular models. The intern will work closely with members of the group to design and execute experiments, analyze and interpret data, and share findings with the Genentech research community. Responsibilities may include cell culture, transfection, gene editing optimization, flow cytometry, PCR, NGS and protocol troubleshooting, while maintaining sterile lab techniques and lab safety compliance. The candidate is expected to be agile, collaborative and eager to contribute to a fast-paced, evolving research program.

Program Highlights

Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Program start dates are in May and June 2023.

Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.

Who You Are

Graduate Level student (MS or PhD).

Preferred majors: Biological Sciences (Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genome Engineering, or a related field).

Other Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Preferably 1+ years of work experience in relevant academic settings.
  • Practical expertise with cell culture procedures and molecular biology techniques (DNA, RNA, PCR, Western Blotting).
  • Additional expertise should include any of the following: DNA nucleases (CRISPR/Cas9), next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, flow cytometry.
  • Familiarity with tools and programs commonly used to annotate and analyze cell and molecular biology data (Benchling, Snapgene, FlowJo, R, Python, etc) are desirable
