Job Summary

Performs standardized laboratory tests to ensure food safety, product quality, and compliance with company and government standards. Follows all protocols, good laboratory practices, and manufacturing guidelines.

Educational Requirements for the Laboratory Technician Role:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Preferred: Associate’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field
    OR
  • At least two years of experience in a Lab/QA role in food, chemical, or agricultural manufacturing (dairy preferred)
  • Knowledge of basic lab techniques
  • Familiarity with PC systems (Excel, Word, email)
  • Understanding of laboratory safety standards

Key Responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician:

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Operate lab equipment (pH meter, pipetters, FTIR, Charm Units, incubator, 3M Petrifilm)
  • Collect, prepare, and process product samples
  • Conduct testing for Antibiotic content, Butterfat, total solids, Homogenization efficiency, Organoleptic testing, Sediment testing, Viscosity, Titratable acidity on milk products, Pasteurization efficiency, Charm swab units, Direct microscopic counts, Standard plate counts, Total coliform counts, Yeast and mold counts, support additional lab testing for milk operations

Routine Checks & Compliance

  • Temperature, weight, and volume checks
  • Chemical concentration checks
  • Water quality testing
  • Environmental ATP testing
  • Allergen swab testing
  • Pre-operation equipment inspections
  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC procedures and policies

Documentation & Reporting

  • Record data accurately in lab notebooks/digital systems
  • Escalate out-of-spec results
  • Generate Certificates of Analysis/Conformance
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and inventory

Certifications & Competency

  • Obtain/maintain state LEO certification for antibiotic testing
  • Pass LEO split sample and internal competency testing
  • Complete all required training modules

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in experiments and troubleshooting
  • Support customer complaint investigations
  • Perform GMP audits
  • Follow safety protocols and PPE requirements
  • Lift 50–60 pounds and work in cooler environments with varying temperatures
