Biochemistry Internship Position Overview
Calico is seeking a highly motivated Protein Biochemistry Intern to join the Protein Science group. This role involves hands-on work in the structural and functional characterization of proteins, providing exposure to scientific discovery in an industry setting. The intern will collaborate closely with Protein Science team members and cross-functional groups to generate mechanistic insights into proteins of interest.
Program Features:

Key Responsibilities
- Express and purify recombinant proteins
- Contribute to structural determination and evaluation of:
- Protein–protein interactions
- Protein–ligand interactions
- Perform and optimize protein activity and/or binding assays
- Communicate scientific results in group meetings and team settings
Required Qualifications for Biochemistry Internship
- Currently pursuing a BS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field
- Experience with recombinant protein work, including:
- Expression in E. coli and/or mammalian systems
- Multi-step protein purification
- Protein analysis and structural characterization
- Knowledge of molecular biology and protein biochemistry principles
- Strong interest in protein biochemistry
- Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Flexible and able to manage shifting priorities and multiple tasks
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Familiarity with experimental structural biology techniques
- Experience with protein binding or functional assays
- Experience using:
- Electronic lab notebooks (e.g., Benchling)
- Online databases (UniProt, NCBI, Protein Data Bank)
- DNA plasmid design software (SnapGene)
- Protein structure analysis tools (PyMOL, ChimeraX)
Eligibility Requirements for Biochemistry Internship
- Able to work in-person in South San Francisco
- Available for a consecutive 11–12 week period during Summer 2026
- Not graduating before December 2026
- Exception: Students enrolling in a graduate program in Fall 2026
- Must be enrolled in a U.S. university
