About the Department

The Department of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Technologist to support laboratory-based research activities. The role is based within the Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR), a division of Johns Hopkins Genomics.

CIDR is a mid-size genome center established in 1997, dedicated to supporting the genetics research community by providing high-quality, cutting-edge genomics services. Its mission is to expand understanding of disease and drive discoveries that translate into improved patient care.

Research Job Summary

The Research Technologist performs laboratory tasks and routine assays following established protocols. Responsibilities include sample handling and the planning and execution of molecular genetics testing—such as genotyping and sequencing—for complex trait research studies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments following established protocols or with instruction
  • Apply basic scientific knowledge to learn laboratory techniques and methods
  • Develop problem-solving skills through progressive training and research experience
  • Run laboratory tests and complete measurements
  • Identify and resolve common issues associated with routine assays
  • Expand technical skills and knowledge related to laboratory research
  • Train users on standard equipment operation and routine laboratory procedures
  • Set up experiments based on defined standards
  • Collect and manage project data
  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance, including inventory monitoring and equipment cleaning
  • Conduct quality control checks of data using software such as GenomeStudio, Spotfire, and internal QC reporting tools
  • Prepare and complete short- and long-read sequencing assays, including Illumina NovaSeq, Oxford Nanopore, and PacBio chemistries
  • Prepare samples for whole-genome sequencing and targeted DNA capture, including library preparation and hybrid capture techniques
  • Perform SNP genotyping assays using Illumina workflows
  • Routinely operate robotics systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Maintain flexibility to work hours beginning as early as 6:00 AM and/or ending as late as 6:00 PM

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, or a related field
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, in accordance with the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics
  • Strong organizational skills for time and data management
  • Ability to function effectively in a protocol-driven, team-based production environment
