Overview

The Research Assistant I provides research support to a neurological Principal Investigator and the Head of the Kennedy Krieger Institute–Johns Hopkins Medicine Sturge-Weber Syndrome Center. The role supports research goals, objectives, and protocols while functioning within the Neurology & Developmental Medicine Practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in clinical research studies focused on Sturge-Weber Syndrome
  • Organize research activities, including collection of measures per protocol from research subjects, parents, and clinic staff
  • Collaborate with research participants at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and interact with patients and families
  • Support coordination and communication of research projects in accordance with funding agency award statements
  • Assist with participant recruitment and implementation of study protocols
  • Conduct telephone screenings and schedule research evaluations
  • Maintain research appointment schedules
  • Support subject recruitment activities, including mailings, posting flyers, and contacting external agencies
  • Score research assessments, verify scoring accuracy, and enter data into research databases
  • Obtain, organize, and track medical records for research participants
  • Assist with writing procedure sheets, data sheets, and other research-related documentation
  • Support acquisition, maintenance, and tracking of research data
  • Assist in developing databases and data-tracking systems
  • Train new staff, students, and volunteers on research protocols
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist with writing results of ongoing studies, including submissions for conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and grant applications
  • Assist with preparation of presentations for internal and external educational and recruitment purposes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education for a Research Assistant Job

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Biology, or a related subfield (required)

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of biomedical or social research experience preferred
  • Familiarity with child development preferred
  • Knowledge of human genetics preferred

Related Training & Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with business and research-related software applications (e.g., STATA)

Compensation

  • Minimum Salary: USD $36,955.98 per year
  • Maximum Salary: USD $60,296.50 per year
