Overview

The Murray and Pearl Rosenberg Memorial Scholarship was established by Pearl Rosenberg, a psychologist and former assistant dean at the University of Minnesota Medical School, in honor of her husband Murray Rosenberg, a physician and professor of genetics and cell biology (1963–1993) and a strong advocate for human rights.

The award supports undergraduate biological sciences students at the University of Minnesota who conduct research benefiting socially or economically disadvantaged communities worldwide, including within the United States.

Purpose of Student Scholarship

The scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing research projects that serve disadvantaged populations, with a preference for work that directly impacts public health.

Award Details

  • $1,000 for short-term experiences (minimum 6 weeks)
  • $1,500 for semester-long experiences

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be undergraduate students in good standing within the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Participate in a research experience lasting at least 6 weeks
  • Be degree-seeking and enrolled in at least 13 undergraduate credits in the semester following the experience
  • Not necessarily require financial aid to be eligible

Additional considerations:

  • Preference is given to credit-bearing programs offered through the university
  • Students traveling to locations designated Level 3 or 4 by the U.S. Department of State must meet additional requirements, including advisor consultation and ITRAAC approval
  • Acceptance of the award may affect financial aid status; recipients are advised to consult OneStop

Application Process of Student Scholarship

Applicants are required to complete essay responses (maximum 350 words each) addressing:

  • Description of the research and the community it will benefit
  • How the research will directly impact public health
  • Reasons for choosing the experience, skills to be gained, and relevance to personal, academic, or professional goals

Additional requirement:

  • If the experience is not part of a university-sponsored program, a letter from the site supervisor confirming acceptance and outlining the goals of the experience must be submitted
