Manufacturing Sciences Intern Position Overview

The company is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Manufacturing Sciences Intern Scientist to join its team in San Diego for a duration of 3–12 months within the Manufacturing Sciences – Product Support team. The role may be full-time and/or part-time, to be determined.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a diagnostic manufacturing environment, with exposure to processes such as Nucleic Acid Testing and Blood Typing Solutions. The intern will work within the Manufacturing Sciences group, gaining knowledge of advanced manufacturing processes and supporting day-to-day activities required for product release in a GMP, ISO 13485, FDA-regulated medical device environment.

Manufacturing Sciences Intern Role Summary

The Manufacturing Sciences Product Support Intern collaborates with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, technical support, supply chain, procurement, quality control, quality assurance, and research and development. The individual contributes to activities such as raw material qualification, nonconformance investigations, corrective and preventive actions, risk assessments, and laboratory support for product disposition.

The intern is expected to work both independently and collaboratively, engaging in daily interactions, meetings, and hands-on tasks. The overall objective is to support key projects that ensure timely product delivery and business continuity.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supporting qualification, characterization, and evaluation of raw materials and critical components.
  • Assisting in the creation and execution of change control processes, ensuring compliance and proper documentation in a regulated environment.
  • Contributing to nonconformance investigations and CAPA development and implementation.
  • Reviewing raw material specifications, supplier documentation, Certificates of Analysis (CoAs), and technical files.
  • Assisting in data collection, trending, and analysis related to raw materials and downstream product performance.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to assess the impact of raw materials on validated manufacturing processes.
  • Drafting or updating technical documents, reports, procedures, and risk assessments.
  • Following GMP practices, documentation standards, and traceability requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to review, understand, and interpret scientific and technical documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other office tools.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and task prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects while adapting to changing priorities.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and function effectively as part of a team.

Education Requirements

  • Minimum of an undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in a relevant technical field such as Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or a related discipline.

Compensation

  • Estimated pay: $20 per hour (California-based role).
  • Final compensation depends on education, experience, skill set, knowledge, work location, internal equity, and market data.
