Junior Bioinformatics Scientist Job Description

The NYC Public Health Laboratory seeks a qualified City Research Scientist II to serve as a Junior Bioinformatics Scientist. The role involves conducting bioinformatics analyses for sequencing data that support public health efforts, developing tools related to pathogen identification, and strengthening the application of genomic tools for public health diagnostic testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting bioinformatics analyses for sequencing data that support public health efforts.
  • Develop or improve tools related to pathogen identification, outbreak tracking, and variant analysis.
  • Conduct literature reviews and stay updated with scientific and epidemiological research.
  • Collaborate with team members on genomics data management.
  • Participate in agency-wide WGS journal club and genomic data exchange working groups.
  • Draft written protocols and maintain accurate records of software tools design.
  • Write original manuscripts for publication based on data analyses.
  • Maintain quality assurance and control of HTS data generated by PHL.

Eligibility Criteria

  • MS or PhD degree in biological sciences, evolutionary biology, genomics, or related fields.
  • At least two years of research experience in the appropriate field.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral, inter-personal, and written communication skills.

Junior Bioinformatics Scientist Skills

  • Strong skills in Linux command line and BASH shell scripting.
  • Proficient in R, Python, C, Java, or other programming languages.
  • Experience in SQL and utilizing multi-core server resources.
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing Analysis (NGSA) tools.
  • Demonstrated work in public health genomics research.
