UCSF Bioinformatics Programmer Job Description

They will be involved in developing and utilizing computational tools and systems to analyze and interpret biological or other research data. This role includes utilizing and developing algorithms, computational techniques, and standard statistical methodologies. The candidate will help design new experiments and lead the execution of building machine learning and statistical models, while maintaining computational infrastructure and managing the flow of samples and information for large-scale studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, clean, and analyze large-scale medical data using various analytic techniques.
  • Build ETL pipelines using R, Python, Go, Rust, shell, SQL, WDL, and Docker.
  • Maintain bioinformatic databases by obtaining and restructuring data.
  • Write and maintain analytic pipelines and tools for discovery and replication analyses.
  • Conduct bioinformatic analyses including variant calling and annotation.
  • Participate in authorship teams under PI supervision.
  • Develop and implement new techniques based on problem requirements.
  • Perform administrative duties as needed.

UCSF Bioinformatics Programmer Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, computational/programming, or related area; MS/PhD preferred.
  • Approximately 12 months of medical/health-data pipeline and analysis experience.
  • Experience with cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and manage cloud-based pipelines.
  • Experience with databases or willingness to learn.
