Associate Biologist Intern – ATCC Federal Solutions Virology Department:

The ATCC Summer Intern Program provides students with an opportunity to contribute as Associate Biologist interns to cutting-edge ATCC projects that support scientific and break-through research, improving the health of global populations. You will support biological manufacturing, the production of biological cultures and derivative products, and contribute to data collection and recording.
Associate Biologist Intern – ATCC Federal Solutions Virology Department:
- Prior experience in an undergraduate biological science lab, following safety procedures and properly handling chemicals and/or biologicals.
- This role supports staff in a variety of laboratory procedures including:
- Viral RNA or plasmid extractions.
- PCR assays and analyzing results
- Verification of plasmids using restriction digestion and sequence analysis.
- Make plasmid maps
- Maintaining cells
- The ideal candidate should have knowledge of basic laboratory skills (using micro-pipettes, gel electrophoresis, making buffers etc.). Prior working experience with mammalian cells and aseptic technique is preferred.
- Microbiology and/or molecular biology coursework and familiarity with concepts of PCR, bacterial plasmids, gel electrophoresis preferred.
- Familiarity with virology concepts is highly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Manufacturing Operations: Manufacturing of biological products by following standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and other controlled documents. Maintain laboratory safety, operations, equipment, and supplies.
- Documentation: Maintain production batch records in compliance with good laboratory practices. Collect, analyze, and report data, ensuring meticulous documentation.
- Continuous Learning and Problem-Solving: Master aseptic technique, gain experience with various cell lines and organisms, and tackle routine challenges in alignment with organizational policies.
Qualifications
Program Qualifications:
- Must currently be enrolled as rising 3rd or 4th year undergraduate, or within 12 months of graduating from a BS or MS academic degree program at an accredited college or university, majoring in in biology, cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related science.
- Must be able to complete a 10-week consecutive full-time internship between June 3 and August 9, 2024.
- Must meet one of the Deemed Export Control Rules; a citizen or national of the United States; person lawfully admitted for permanent residence (a holder of a Form I-551 or “green card”); person admitted as a refugee; person granted asylum; or temporary resident granted amnesty under the 1986 legalization program.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Prior experience in an undergraduate biological science lab, following safety procedures and properly handling biologicals and/or chemicals.
- Hands on laboratory experience and aseptic technique.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to follow laboratory safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and ability to follow strict protocols and corporate policies and procedures.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, computer skills, and the ability to critically analyze data sets.
