Boston Beer is currently hiring a Developer & Lab Technician, Innovation in Walden, NY. The Innovation Product Developer will work as part of the Innovation Development Lab assigned to rapid prototyping for new product innovations. The position is also responsible for overseeing and/or executing all daily QA lab functions for the Walden Cidery.
This person must be driven to push the boundaries of beverage innovation while ensuring product safety, functionality, and scalability of recipe to production level. Candidate will also be called upon to conduct research and testing of new ingredients, sensory panels, process techniques, and potential packaging technologies. Lab responsibilities will include preparation, full analysis and packaging of product prototypes for sensory evaluations taking place at corporate offices in Boston. Also expected to maintain a clean and highly functional product development and QA spaces. Including equipment, instrumentation and consumables.

What You’ll Do:
- Product Design & Process Development
- Versatility in the exploration of both traditional and breakthrough product development approaches for a wide range of beverages
- Executes accurate and high-quality blends of R&D recipes per request
- Create and maintain SOPs for all new and established processes
- Works in tandem with BBC Procurement to source ingredients
- Organizes, leads product development tastings, reporting outcomes to key project stakeholders
- Works closely with corporate Legal team to understand regulatory environment for all proposed new products including labeling and nutritionals
- Active participation in product scale-ups in collaboration with engineering, production, accounting, purchasing, marketing, labeling, and corporate as needed
Lab Management:
- Maintains beverage development laboratory, managing the upkeep, troubleshooting, and instrumentation needed to create the highest quality products at bench scale
- Responsible for GMP & Lab Maintenance/Upkeep
- Tracking of recipe adjustments made throughout timeline with corresponding sensory notes
- Flavor library – managing flavor/ingredient inventory for developing products
- Fosters relationships with ingredient suppliers and order new ingredients for upcoming projects
- Assist in collection and review of data for all blends in preparation for recipe transition to production
- Responsible for maintaining the inventory of key lab supplies such as glassware, pipettes tips, and bulk ingredients
Other - Develop critical partnerships with external partners and consultants to insure successful, timely and effective product development
- Ensure compliance with BBC standards for periodic third-party testing of products for compliance with TTB standards
- Displays excellent project management skills by tracking and organizing all documentation and communication relevant to active projects
- Special analysis request/projects per Innovation and Cidery Staff
- Support events/functions of the Walden Cidery and local marketing as necessary
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor of Sciences degree, preferably in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology,
- Fermentation Science or other life sciences
- 3+ years of related industry experience
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required
- Report writing and good communication skills is required
- Proven ability to work in a flexible and changing schedule
- Masters preferred (but not required)
- Prior experience with flavors a plus
- Experience with project management tracking systems
- 25% travel
