Downstream Process Development Scientist Job Description
The Downstream Process Development Scientist will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of downstream purification processes for biopharmaceutical products. This practical, lab-based role involves running experiments, solving problems, and adapting processes as projects evolve. The successful candidate will work within an established DSP team and contribute to various modalities, including viral vectors and nucleic acid-based products.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize downstream purification processes for biopharmaceutical products.
- Conduct hands-on laboratory experimentation and pilot-scale DSP runs.
- Apply chromatography and filtration techniques to improve yield, purity, and robustness.
- Operate and develop chromatography methods using ÄKTA systems.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data using techniques such as ELISA, HPLC / UPLC, and SDS-PAGE.
- Collaborate with upstream, analytical, and project teams to deliver customer programs.
- Contribute to the efficient operation of the DSP laboratory.
- Support scale-up, knowledge transfer, and process troubleshooting activities.
Eligibility Criteria Required For Downstream Process Development Scientist
- Demonstrable experience in planning and delivering complex laboratory technical work, data analysis, and reporting.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge in Biochemistry, Biologics Purification, and Biochemical Engineering.
- Experience in designing and optimizing chromatography-based purification processes.
- Familiarity with TFF, ELISA, and HPLC/UPLC techniques.
- Flexibility to adjust working hours around experimental needs.
Required Skills
- Experience using ÄKTA chromatography systems (desirable but not essential).
- Experience working with AAV, viral vectors, or DNA/RNA-based products (desirable).
- Background beyond monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (desirable).
- Experience in early-stage, development-focused or non-rigid GMP environments (desirable).
Salary: £26,939–£36,000 per annum + attractive benefits
