Protillion Biosciences and Merck Join Forces in Drug Discovery Deal Worth Up to $510 Million
Protillion Biosciences is a California-based biotech company that has announced a major drug discovery collaboration with Merck. This is an important step forward for the company. This deal combines Protillion’s advanced protein engineering platform with Merck’s global drug discovery and development capabilities to identify and also develop new therapeutic elements.
“Protillion’s platform offers a compelling opportunity and we look forward to working with the team to advance these programs,” said the Vice President of Discovery Biologics at Merck Research Laboratories, Juan Alvarez, PhD.
Under the terms of the multi-target discovery collaboration and license agreement, Protillion could receive up to approximately $510 million in research, development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments if multiple programs successfully advance through development. The company will also receive an undisclosed upfront payment from Merck.
“Merck is a global leader in biopharmaceutical innovation, making them an ideal partner to deploy our technology,”. “This relationship underscores the power of our platform to solve complex protein engineering challenges,” said Curtis Layton, PhD, CEO and co-founder of Protillion.
The collaboration will use Protillion’s proprietary Prot-MaP technology, a high-throughput protein engineering platform designed to generate large amounts of protein data at an unprecedented scale. The platform enables scientists to quantitatively analyze millions of protein variants in a single experiment, helping researchers identify and optimize biologic drug candidates more efficiently than traditional methods.
According to Protillion, the technology combines megascale data generation with artificial intelligence-driven protein design. This approach allows researchers to discover and engineer proteins with complex characteristics, including multi-target specificity and pH-dependent sweeping properties. The platform is also designed to reduce model overfitting, a common challenge in AI-driven drug discovery.
The partnership reflects a growing trend in the pharmaceutical industry, where large drug makers are increasingly collaborating with technology-focused biotech companies to accelerate the discovery of new medicines. Pharmaceutical Executive noted that the agreement highlights the continued momentum of platform-based drug discovery partnerships across the sector.
Protillion Biosciences believes its technology can help shorten the time needed to identify promising drug candidates while improving the quality of the resulting therapies.
Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, continues to expand its use of advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to strengthen its research pipeline.
While specific therapeutic areas involved in the Protillion collaboration have not been disclosed, the agreement gives Merck access to Protillion’s unique protein engineering capabilities and large-scale data generation platform.
By combining these technologies with Merck’s global research infrastructure, the companies aim to discover and advance new biologic therapies for patients with unmet medical needs.
