Los Alamos National Laboratory The successful postdoctoral candidate will perform spectral signature characterization, develop novel analysis algorithms, and support field experiments involving real-to-life processes. The postdoc will apply their technical expertise to adapt existing algorithms and develop new ones for bioorganism detection and identification, with 20% of their time spent in a laboratory collecting spectral measurements on biological samples, and their remaining time on algorithm development and application.

The post doc will be additionally expected to communicate research findings at weekly meetings, keep official laboratory notebooks, and complete all required training. They will be encouraged to attend seminars that interest them and will be provided networking opportunities at the laboratory and with our external research collaborators. They will also be expected to present their work at conferences and to sponsors when requested.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated research in chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, spectroscopy, computer science or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience with algorithm development.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with good laboratory practices and experimental design.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with a strong publication record.
  • Proven ability to manage time and see tasks to completion.
  • Proven ability to produce quality work by applying attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

Education: Ph.D. from an accredited program in chemistry, biology, computer science, or a related technical field, completed within the past 3 years. Must have cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

In addition to the Minimum Job Requirements, the ideal candidate would have interest and expertise in one or more of the following:
Knowledge of programming in Python and other languages
Ability to analyze large data sets and the design and use of experimental results to improve algorithm development.
Familiarity with microbiology and/or spectroscopy-and the research techniques necessary to perform and design experiments related to these fields-is also desired.
