Department Description:
Under general supervision of the Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Manager, primarily performs diagnostic parasitology on clinical and necropsy specimens from domestic, equine, livestock, poultry, and marine species. Responsibilities include specimen receipt and preparation, workflow organization, parasite detection and identification, documentation of objective findings, and result entry in accordance with SOPs and established turnaround times. Provides secondary support to the Microbiology Laboratory for daily sample setup, bacterial identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The incumbent works under the direction of Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) staff, the Supervisor, and the Service Chief. #CA-AR.
Educational Requirements for Lab Technician Role:
- Bachelorโs degree in Parasitology, Microbiology, Infectious Disease, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in a veterinary diagnostic or research laboratory.
- Proficiency with compound, fluorescent, and dissecting microscopes for parasite and pathogen detection.
Key Responsibilities of the Lab Technician Role:
- 40% Clinical Parasitology: Perform diagnostic parasitology on various animal specimens, including domestic, livestock, poultry, equine, and marine species.
- 40% Clinical Microbiology: Support microbiological analysis including bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
- 10% General Laboratory Duties: Prepare samples, maintain workflow organization, and ensure compliance with SOPs.
- 5% Communication: Collaborate with supervisors, CLS staff, and other departments for efficient reporting.
- 5% Hospital & LIS Systems: Manage accurate data entry and maintain confidentiality in laboratory information systems.
Skills Required for the Lab Technician Role:
- For the Medical Technologist role, you need expertise in diagnostic parasitology (flotation, sedimentation, Baermann, McMaster, DFA for Giardia/Cryptosporidium).
- Experience identifying ectoparasites and endoparasites using taxonomic keys and reference specimens.
- Familiarity with LC-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (MIC, disk diffusion).
- Strong organizational, technical, and data management skills.
- Proficiency in safe laboratory practices, biosafety, and infection control.
- Experience with aseptic techniques and biosafety cabinet operations preferred.
