  • Position: Post-doctoral Research Scientist – Stem Cell Biology to Model Sporadic Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Ref: BAP-2026-361
  • Location: Leuven

About The Organization

The VIB-KU Leuven Center for Neuroscience is a world-class research hub embedded within the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and integrated into the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB). KU Leuven ranks among Europe’s most innovative universities, fostering an international, multidisciplinary environment dedicated to breakthrough clinical transitions.

This post-doctoral residency is funded via the prestigious Flemish Cognitive Compass Project—a high-visibility, multi-university alliance uniting VIB with the Universities of Leuven, Ghent, and Antwerp. The mission of this collaborative network is to revolutionize the early detection of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease and discover novel pathways for disease-modifying therapies by mapping real-world patient genotypes to functional in vitro human phenotypes.

Post Doctoral Research Vacancy – Key Responsibilities

As a Post-doctoral Research Scientist, you will steer the project’s in-vitro platform development, bridging clinical participant biobanking with high-throughput mechanistic screenings.

Your core engineering, laboratory, and project management duties will include:

  • iPSC Biobank Coordination: Overseeing the derivation, stringent quality control (QC), phenotypic characterization, and formal storage of participant-derived iPSC lines in coordination with core facility networks and contract research organizations (CROs).
  • 3D Platform Architecture: Establishing and managing an automated, 3D neuronal-microglial-astrocyte triple co-culture platform to simulate the central nervous system microenvironment.
  • Workflow Automation & SOPs: Driving platform workflow optimization, drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and spearheading the procurement of specialized high-throughput liquid handling equipment to advance this Post-doctoral Research Vacancy.
  • Mechanistic Discovery Assays: Utilizing plate-based screening, functional assays, and imaging to conduct target validation studies addressing fundamental and translational questions in Alzheimer’s progression.
  • Cross-Functional Data Analytics: Maintaining absolute data integrity, organizing complex multi-parametric datasets, and compiling technical project summaries for internal multi-university research committees to support this Biomedical Sciences Job.

Qualifications & Profile Requirements For Post Doctoral Research Vacancy

This research track is tailored for highly organized, rigorous scientists who possess an advanced technical command of stem cell differentiation and a passion for modeling neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.

  • Educational Foundation: A formal PhD degree (or equivalent doctoral certification) in Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related quantitative life science field.
  • Stem Cell Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with human iPSC maintenance, multi-lineage differentiation, and standardized cellular QC protocols.
  • In Vitro Modeling Acumen: Demonstrated proficiency working with advanced 3D cell culture systems, multi-cell co-cultures, or plate-based screening assays.
  • Data Rigor: A strong tracked record of precise data generation, technical experimental reporting, and compliance documentation.
  • Linguistic Skills: Complete fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory to collaborate within this international research environment and accelerate your KU Leuven career.

In short, the Post-doctoral Research Scientist position at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Neuroscience is a definitive route to transitioning your stem cell background into a high-visibility clinical translation asset. Securing this appointment allows you to move past simplified monolayer cell systems and actively pioneer the complex 3D triple co-culture automations that shape modern therapeutic pipelines for Alzheimer’s disease. If you hold a qualifying PhD, possess advanced in vitro neurobiology instincts, and are ready to advance your research within a premier European network, apply before the July 15, 2026 deadline to secure this premier Post-doctoral Research Vacancy, launch an elite KU Leuven career, and lock in this outstanding Biomedical Sciences Job.
