About The University

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is the institution offering this laboratory research opportunity. The advertised position supports its translational cancer research program, with work spanning animal models, cell-based experiments, and molecular biology.

Research Associate Job Description

The Laboratory Research Associate will divide time between animal colony operations and routine bench work. The role involves maintaining animal welfare and breeding records while supporting cell culture, molecular biology assays, drug treatment experiments, and functional studies.

The laboratory’s research spans exosome biology, cancer metabolism, and small-molecule drug discovery in breast cancer and acute myeloid leukemia. Consistent procedures and accurate records are essential across both its animal and cell-based research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee weaning and maintain accurate breeding records to support animal line sustainability.
  • Assist with DNA collection through tail/ear snipping, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, oral gavage, and tissue harvesting.
  • Perform PCR-based genotyping and maintain a digital database of animal strains and genetic status.
  • Conduct animal health checks and promptly report welfare concerns to the Principal Investigator and veterinary staff.
  • Maintain and passage cancer cell lines under sterile conditions, including cell counting, viability testing, and cryopreservation.
  • Perform RNA, DNA, and protein extraction, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting.
  • Assist with drug treatment experiments, proliferation and apoptosis assays, and data collection.
  • Support extracellular vesicle and exosome isolation and characterization under supervision.
  • Follow IACUC protocols and institutional biosafety guidelines.
  • Maintain clean workspaces, monitor room conditions, sterilize equipment, and manage laboratory supplies.

Educational Requirements and Eligibility

Applicants must hold a B.S. or Associate degree in Biology, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related life science field.

Experience Requirements

  • Direct experience handling and restraining small rodents.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques, including PCR, Western blot, and ELISA.
  • Proficiency in basic laboratory mathematics and digital record-keeping.
  • Experience with cancer cell lines is preferred.
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques is highly preferred.
  • Experience with mouse or rat models is a plus.
  • Experience isolating or characterizing extracellular vesicles or exosomes is advantageous but not required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong reliability and punctuality to support consistent animal care.
  • Clear communication and ability to coordinate with diverse research teams.
  • Ability to follow complex Standard Operating Procedures accurately.
  • Ability to troubleshoot routine technical difficulties.
  • Sustained attention to detail, organization, and analytical thinking.
