Position Description

The laboratory of Dr. Wendy Maury in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine has an opening for a post-baccalaureate research intern position.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform library and online research on specified topics for use in experimentation.
  • Perform experimental studies based on given hypotheses and goals; evaluate and record outcomes of experiments based on hypotheses and goals and submit for investigator’s inspection.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of experiments.
  • Observe techniques in other laboratories.
Education Requirement: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or Immunology.
Required Qualifications: A minimum of 12-months of experience working in a virology or microbiology laboratory is required. Prior experience working with pathogenic microorganisms is preferred, but not required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Basic knowledge of each of the following:

  • General microbiologic techniques, such as culture, storage, and safe handling of pathogenic agents.
  • Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme analyses, western blotting, and ELISA.
  • Handling infectious animal and/or human tissues.
  • Mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques.
  • Immunofluorescence and Electron microscopy.
  • Gathering, recording, and analyzing of experimental data.
Desirable Qualifications: Working proficiency with each of the following:

  • Passaging and maintaining various cell lines.
  • Immunofluorescence microscopy.
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Handling animals, including but not restricted to IV injections, blood collection, and performing in vivo experiments with the animals.
