Job Details

Company: Retro Biosciences

Location: Redwood City, CA, USA

Job Type: On-site, full-time

Programme: Microglia Therapeutics, through Retro’s accelerated industry-based PhD

Experience Band: PhD fellow / graduate-entry research training after MS. Freshers eligible for the PhD-fellow track.

Job Description

Retro’s PhD is an accelerated 3-year, industry-based, accredited programme with Retro College of Woolf University. As a fellow you support and lead aging and programme-related research while progressing through milestones designed to prepare you for a scientist role. You work in a fast-paced startup environment under guidance of leading scientists, with company resources to accelerate learning and experimentation volume.

On the Microglia team you will be involved in making iPSC-derived CNS cell-types including microglia and developing models to evaluate their therapeutic potential.

Key Responsibilities

In this programme you will:

  • Lean into an immersive research experience (wet-lab, writing, cell-care cadence as needed) with mentorship and growth.
  • Perform regular culture of mammalian cells, mainly cell lines and iPSCs, using aseptic tissue-culture techniques.
  • Differentiate iPSCs to brain cell-types including microglia, neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
  • Differentiate and optimize 2D and 3D (organoid) culture protocols.
  • Perform cell-based and molecular assays to characterize cells and demonstrate function.
  • Process animal tissue and run downstream assays; support development of new assays as research progresses.
  • Plan and execute wet-lab and/or computational experiments with the team and independently under PI supervision.
  • Select research topics collaboratively in alignment with programme goals and Retro’s mission.
  • Collaborate with Computational Biology, Automation, Vivarium and Operations.
  • Publish/present results; write a thesis and defend it before a thesis committee; meet progressive-independence milestones toward becoming an independent scientist.

Eligibility Criteria

  • MS in Biology or a related field (European-style PhD programme without intro classes — must hit the ground running).
  • Freshers eligible for the PhD-fellow track.

Required Skills

  • Experience with standard tissue culture and tissue-processing techniques.
  • Proven ability to drive work to completion independently and in a team; strong self-motivation for research and writing.
  • Demonstrated organization, time management and attention to detail; passion for aging and age-related disease research.

Bonus: iPSC culture; differentiation of iPSCs to neural or myeloid cell-types; cryosectioning / brain-tissue experience.

Salary

About $98,638/year plus equity and benefits (medical/dental/vision, 401(k) with match, flexible time off, parental leave, learning stipend, longevity stipend, sponsored lunch/snacks).
