Department Description: The GSK Genomic Technologies team is industry-leading in statistical genetics and computational biology. The team leverages major scientific and technological advances, including investment in biobanks linked to large-scale human health databases, next-generation sequencing datasets, cutting-edge informatics platforms, breakthrough understanding of biological pathways, industry-academia partnerships, in order to identify the best targets and to continue evaluation of targets through their life in the pipeline.

Job Description: This summer intern project offers a unique opportunity for a graduate student to engage in the development of a complete human knockout catalog to support target discovery and drug development. The primary objective is to consolidate data and generate a user-friendly display of the complete human knockouts in biobanks with individual-level genetic and phenotypic data accessible to GSK (e.g. UKBB). Stretch goals encompass exploring clinically important variants and incorporating the manual curation outcome of the loss of function variants. The job requires strong computational skills and efficient scientific communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, or a related field.
  • Must have active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from an MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
  • Able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 10-12 week internship cycle (May-July/August).
  • Experience in analyses of human genetic and phenotypic data, and interpretation of genetic associations.
  • Proficient in at least one general-purpose programming language (R, Python) suitable for statistical genetic analyses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Self-directed and self-motivated.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals or international conference presentations.
  • Cloud-based computing system (e.g. Google Cloud).
  • Experience in data visualization.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • If your skillsets are a match for this role, you will be contacted by our recruitment team with next steps to complete our internal World of GSK Assessment.
  • Please note, you must receive a passing score to move forward in the interview process. Once your assessment is complete, a recruiter will review your results and be in touch with next steps.
