Job Title: Fermentation Scientist III

Location: Plymouth, Minnesota

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of four years of work experience in the fermentation industry
  • Knowledge and application of fermentation principles relevant to bioprocess development, scale-up, and optimization
  • Hands-on experience with lab-scale fermentation equipment and microbial techniques
    Fluency with English

Preferred:​​​​​​​

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical/bioscience engineering OR a related field
  • Experience in technical leadership of biotechnology projects
  • Strong foundation in microbiology, aseptic technique, and sterile design
  • Experience with pilot or plant scale fermentation and downstream processing equipment
  • Experience with probiotic or active culture development and production, including recovery, stabilization, and preservation
  • Knowledge of omics-based tools

Job Purpose and Impact

The Senior Fermentation Scientist will be responsible for research and development on fermentation products and processes related to food ingredients, cultures, and probiotics. In this role, you will work with a global multidisciplinary team on innovation projects. You will provide thought and execution leadership on fermentation and downstream process development at lab and pilot scale while partnering with stakeholders in R&D, business, engineering, and production.

Key Accountabilities

  • Complete initial scoping on projects to develop and optimize processes for the production of functional cultures and fermentation-based ingredients.
  • Create technical work plans for complex fermentation and downstream processing experiments at lab or pilot scale.
  • Conduct or coordinate experiments with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret complex data to support sound conclusions.
    Communicate experimental outcomes in reports and presentations, to provide recommendations for future work.
  • Partner with business colleagues to identify, troubleshoot and evaluate new technologies while maintaining awareness of the external landscape for biotechnology R&D.
  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
