Hershey Food Science Internship The Food and Ingredient Technology Internship/Co-Op is a unique opportunity ideally suited for a student who is interested and capable of working a 12-15 month assignment starting in May 2021 through August 2022.

Food and Ingredient Technology Internship May 2021 – August 2022

Overview:

Hershey Food Science Internship

This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain significant, real-world work experience in the Consumer Packaged Goods industry while working under the supervision of experienced Food Scientists to meet Hershey’s continuous improvement goals. The work schedule would be full-time (40 hours per week, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm), and the student would be based in Hershey, PA.

Responsibilities:

The mission of the Product and Process Optimization Group is to provide technical and scientific resources to The Hershey Company’s US operations for Continuous Improvement. The student will have an opportunity to gain real-world work experience in the Confectionery Industry while working under the supervision of experienced Food Scientists and Food Technologists. The student will gain experience interfacing with a variety of personnel across the Company which includes Continuous Improvement, Manufacturing, Commodities, Quality Assurance, Chocolate Research, Sensory, Product Development, Engineering, and others. This position may require up to 50% travel to our manufacturing facilities.

– Optimization and troubleshooting of manufacturing processes, raw materials/ingredients, and product formulations

– Troubleshooting and optimizing manufacturing processes and products.

– Support of our growth and margin improvement efforts with a specific focus on ingredients and key commodities

– Support of the growth and innovation efforts and the new product development process

– Identification, Development and Specification of ingredients and/or processes that may be new to Hershey or confectionery industry; some of which could be patentable or game-changing.

Typical Student assignments may include:

Hershey Food Science Internship

– Product formulation optimization work from initial design, to benchtop and plant validation testing.

– Designing and conducting pilot and production scale processes and tests, documenting and evaluating data, and writing technical reports along with presentations of the data.

– Ingredient evaluations based on established procedures under the guidance of technical professionals.

– Hershey Food Science Internship Identifying process equipment through testing, establishing equipment operating parameters, and providing process flow diagrams.

– Troubleshooting and optimizing manufacturing processes and products.

– Supporting technical professionals in preparing chocolate and confectionery samples.

Qualifications:

Education

– Preferred Major: Food Science or Food Engineering at the junior level or higher.

– GPA 3.0 or higher

Other Requirements

Hershey Food Science Internship

– A basic understanding in science (biology, chemistry or food technology/engineering) to apply skills to support benchtop/lab and manufacturing testing under the supervision of professional.

– Strong problem solving and analytical skills

– Excellent verbal and written communication skills

– The ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and work both independently and in multidisciplinary groups/teams with a high level of motivation

– Hershey Food Science Internship Good organizational and interpersonal skills along with creativity, flexibility, and initiative

– A desire to work hands-on in the laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing environments with equipment and products

– Eligibility to work in the United States for any employer

– A valid Drivers’ License, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel to plant locations or other assignments as required

– Availability to work on a flexible schedule from time to time including off-shifts and weekends

– Hershey Food Science Internship Ability to lift up to fifty pounds

– Proficiency with common Windows-based computer software programs, including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.

– Some experience or familiarity with AutoCAD, MathCAD, SAP, and programming software is desirable.
