What you’ll need to be successful
- B.Sc. plus 2 years of experience in conducting challenge studies at a Biosafety 2 level; or an M.Sc. in Microbiology and Food Science, or a related technical degree.
- Familiar with National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF) guidelines for conducting challenge studies and inactivation studies.
- Knowledge of food products and pathogens likely to be encountered in different foods.
- Knowledge of the fundamental microbial ecology of foods and factors that influence microbial behavior in foods

Our Beloit, WI location is home to our Corporate Headquarters for the North American Region. This location has approximately 700 employees at this location that in roles such as regulatory, RD&A, finance, procurement, supply chain and customer care. It is easily commutable from the Rockford, Madison, and Milwaukee areas. What you’ll do
- The RD&A Scientist collaborates with Food Scientists, Microbiologists, and Business Development experts to optimize the application of existing Kerry products or support the development of new products for clean label control of spoilage organisms and pathogens in food products. S/he will be responsible for the design and execution of benchtop studies evaluating the performance of clean label antimicrobials in a wide variety of food matrices. The candidate is expected to curate an internal proprietary database of challenge studies to support a rapid response to customer queries as well as help guide future product development or application initiatives.
- S/he will quickly become proficient in the utility of Kerry’s clean-label food protection products. The candidate will also keep current with the state of the art by complementing their experimental work with literature searches and participation in relevant conferences or online forums. The successful candidate will strive to meet customer expectations while maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Manage and conduct microbial challenge studies and inactivation studies across a broad portfolio of food applications.
- Validate the performance of Kerry clean-label antimicrobial products in novel applications. Benchmark performance against competing technologies.
- Coordinate external 3rd party challenge studies, including materials, data and reporting. Provide input as appropriate for proper study design and execution.
- Perform periodic reviews of the internal challenge study database and present findings to Technical Business Development leaders to identify commercially-relevant gaps in the study database.
- Develop and execute an annual plan of challenge/inactivation studies in concert with Technical Business Development.
- Build strong working relations with R&D leaders in Kerry Taste and Nutrition food science teams.
