Educational Requirements for the Lab Technician Role:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Preferred: Two-year Applied Science degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, or Microbiology
  • 1 year of experience in a food laboratory or similar environment

Licenses / Certifications:

  • Pennsylvania Industry Analyst approval for Appendix N Testing Program (or ability to obtain within 45 days)
  • Pennsylvania Weighmaster License (within 30 days)

Key Responsibilities of the Lab Technician:

  • Perform receiving lab duties: weighing trucks, observing sample collection, preparing receiving tickets
  • Evaluate truck shipments based on established acceptance criteria
  • Enter data into computer systems and generate reports
  • Conduct NIR methods, acidity tests, sink work, and other laboratory procedures
  • Prepare chemical solutions and media; sterilize equipment
  • Perform butterfat and total solids tests on milk, cream, and condensed products
  • Maintain accurate lab records, quality control logs, and documentation
  • Certify finished product meets customer and government specifications
  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and integrity of lab work
  • Perform basic microbiology and environmental sampling
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain safe work practices

Skills Required for the Lab Technician Role:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Familiarity with food laboratory procedures
  • Knowledge of dairy testing methods (preferred)
  • Ability to follow standardized processes and safety protocols
  • Good organizational and documentation skills
