Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist Student (MLS-S) provides laboratory services for both inpatients and outpatients at Lexington Medical Center. The MLS-S ensures excellent quality in laboratory testing and accurate analysis that improves patient outcomes. Testing is performed only after successful completion of formal clinical training and signed approval from the instructor and supervisor of the respective department. All testing is conducted under direct supervision of senior MLT/MLS technologists and limited to trained departments. All responsibilities align with the mission, vision, and strategic imperatives of Lexington Medical Center.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: A Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university with courses in the physical and biological sciences.

Essential Functions

Performs under the supervision of an MLS/MLT instructor.

May collect specimens, including venipunctures and capillary punctures from patients of various ages.

Performs automated and manual laboratory testing under supervision, following LMC Laboratory procedures and accreditation standards.

Reports test results independently after completing formal training with the instructor and supervisor approval.

Restricted to testing only in departments where clinical training has been completed.

Post-training responsibilities include specimen processing, test procedure performance, data evaluation, instrument calibration, quality control, troubleshooting, and result documentation.

Recognizes abnormal results, correlates with patient data, and follows appropriate notification protocols.

Maintains competency in waived, moderate, and high complexity testing as per policy.

Adheres to LMC safety protocols and provides care appropriate to patient needs.

Works in a team environment with staff, physicians, patients, and families, contributing to optimal healthcare outcomes.

Communicates clearly, maintains confidentiality, and reports alert values promptly.

Ensures test interpretation issues are appropriately addressed by referring to supervisors or pathologists.
