Overview
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) hires a Soils Scientist Trainee to join its Northcentral Regional Office in the Clean Water Division. This is a Civil Service Permanent Full-Time position designed to train you in soil science-based environmental evaluation, especially for sewage disposal systems.

Description of Work
As a Soils Scientist Trainee, you’ll engage in a one-year training program that will prepare you for the responsibilities of a full-fledged Soils Scientist. Key responsibilities include:

Evaluating permit applications and engineering designs

Reviewing sewage facility plans for soil suitability and regulatory compliance

Conducting on-site assessments of land for sewage disposal systems

Providing technical guidance on soil conditions and environmental impact

Making informed recommendations for permits or system modifications
This role will involve independent judgment and technical decision-making within your area of responsibility.

Salary Range
- $50,836.00 – $77,321.00 Annually
(Starting salary may be non-negotiable in some cases.)

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Telework: Up to 3 days per week (requires high-speed internet and PA residency)
Minimum Qualifications

Three years and six months of technical experience in soil testing, classification, remediation, or suitability work, plus 15 college credits in soil science

A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, agricultural science, earth science, or a related field with 15 soil science credits

An equivalent combination of experience and education totaling 15 soil science credits
