Summary

The Food Technologist supports product optimization and cost-saving initiatives across the enterprise. This role leads and contributes to Continuous Improvement (CI) projects, ensuring technical feasibility, stakeholder alignment, and successful implementation in manufacturing environments.

A successful candidate in this Food Technologist role will be an effective communicator at multiple levels in the organization, interested in both product and process improvement, and comfortable working in varying environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support CI projects focused on product cost optimization, including building and analyzing business cases.

  • Develop lab-scale formulas/recipes, test new formulations in the lab, scale in pilot plant, then in manufacturing plants as required.

  • Align with key stakeholders (Manufacturing, Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Planning, Packaging) and identify challenges impacting projects.

  • Lead projects through proper governance or stage-gate processes.

  • Work with CI Engineering to assess equipment capabilities and contribute to capital improvement projects.

  • Lead production trials for reformulations and alternate ingredients.

  • Acquire and analyze production, quality, and performance data to understand impact of changes.

  • Communicate regularly: lead meetings, prepare reports, send summaries, update process documentation.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to develop future CI opportunities.

  • Evaluate technical feasibility and business impact of new ideas (low to medium complexity).

  • Provide technical guidance to internal teams and external vendors to ensure alignment with project scope.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong foundation in food science, chemistry, and ingredient functionality. Experience in chocolate or confection products preferred.

  • Able to communicate effectively across levelsโ€”from executive to plant floor.

  • Formal problem-solving experience (Lean, Six Sigma, PDCA) is a plus.

  • Strong project management and analytical skills.

  • Experience with lab, pilot, and plant-scale equipment.

  • Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

  • Flexibility to work in diverse environments: laboratory, pilot plant, manufacturing, including off-shift/extended hours as needed.
